Growing hematology market in the Philippines
Founded in October 1983, Biocare has provided diagnostic equipment to customers in the Philippines for more than four decades. Biocare is Boule’s distributor of Swelab products in the Philippines and has over 300 installed systems nationwide. Here, we spoke with the company’s CEO, Alexander Crisostomo, about his perspectives on market development, technology trends, and the collaboration with Boule.
What general market and technology trends do you expect to see?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing healthcare technologies. Advanced AI systems can process information faster than manual workflows, potentially improving efficiency and supporting more standardized data interpretation. AI is already being applied in some hematology instruments, where sensors and algorithms assist in cell classification.
We also expect continued growth in point-of-care testing, with expanded hematology parameters and improved connectivity. Results may increasingly be transmitted through digital platforms, enabling clinicians to review data remotely. Demand is expected to rise as mobile clinics and stand-alone laboratories expand services beyond major urban centers into more remote and developing regions.
How do you think the hematology market in the Philippines will develop?
We expect the hematology market in the Philippines to grow steadily as the country continues to strengthen its healthcare system through the Universal Health Care Act. Demand is likely to increase as laboratories transition from manual blood cell counting to automated 3-part analyzers, and from 3-part to 5-part analyzers.
In parallel, there is growing emphasis on after-sales support and preventive maintenance programs, as laboratories increasingly value reliable service alongside analytical performance.
How would you describe the cooperation with Boule?
The cooperation between Biocare and Boule is built on a long-term working relationship. We have collaborated for eight years with the shared aim of delivering diagnostic solutions and supporting the healthcare sector. While the Philippine market is competitive, transparent communication and technical support have contributed to a stable and productive partnership.
What do you view as the main advantages of Boule?
Boule’s portfolio and business approach align well with our market needs. Swelab systems are well established in routine laboratory workflows, and their ease of use is valued by customers. Training initiatives, such as those offered through the Boule Academy, support distributors in staying informed about hematology technologies and applications.
Technical service and product support are also important factors in maintaining customer confidence and continuity of operations.
Anything else you want to mention?
The micropipette adapter (MPA) has been a frequently referenced feature among users of Swelab Alfa 3-part systems in the Philippines, particularly in settings where small sample volumes are common. There is strong interest in future developments that combine expanded analytical capability with compact sampling solutions.
The hematology market continues to evolve, with innovation playing a key role. Regional availability of technical support and reagents is also increasingly important to reduce response times and support laboratories across Southeast Asia.
